Yes, we expect days like this, but I really don't like to think about it when it goes on a month or more at a time. I was anxious to get a camera so my pictures would be good enough to post. I have repurposed quite a few things, and some I assemble from new findings. This is the third month that I have sold in a small flea market here where I live, but I wanted to show some on my sister blog. The camera I had just would not show enough detail even though I experimented in taking pictures in different areas and with different light. It just was not going to do.
I got a camera and guess what? Within a week my computer died and I got another one, my flat screen TV that was barely past warranty went and you name it, including losing a wheel from the lawn mower! I got the wheel back on, my TV will be ready in a matter of days and everything for the moment is operation!
There will be additions to my blogs....I promise...about my exercise program and about my more stylish persuits. We have had extremely hot weather here and drought conditions so the exercise is about what I can mostly do indoors, and because of the heat I break down my yard work into three outings. A late evening just before dark, early the next morning at first light and then again that evening late if need be.
That way I don't have to be out too long at a time in the heat. Needless to say the days I do yardwork, I don't exercise, I count that as my exercise.

Well here goes....
I am pleased to say that I have worked out an exercise routine for myself. I have an idea now how many reps I can start with and then finish it all off with about 15 minutes on the bike. I am ready to start!!! I will tell you about some of this routine as time goes on. I am just most happy to say that I am still seeing improvement in my mobility and motions I can do. I can stand on one leg flamingo style and then switch to the other. I am also happy to say that some of the exercises I can use are the good ol' standbys we did in PE such as windmills, stretches and jumping jacks.

Beginning to end
Please if you sign in to take a look, go to the beginning. This has been a process where I tried to lay a background to the story before I came to what I hope to do now. Each entry is not a separate topic.
I have attended a couple free classes and got more ideas online for exercises that will help me with balance, and I have purchased a bike (stationary) so I can do my exercise indoors and privately. And yes I have two pairs of skates. One for outside and one for indoors.
Now to start, I need to work out a routine for getting some activity in each morning, drop some weight and get started. I also have to come up with a place to skate.

Surely I can get in enough shape to skate....just go round and round, I am not thinking of jumps and spins !

A Few Facts About Aspartame
Aspartame is made of four components one of which turns to formaldehyde at 94 degrees...
Diet sodas have the highest concentration... Above other products containing it
Other products with aspartame include:
sugar free chewing gum
yogurt- especially the type that is fruit flavored or contains a little fruit...
Flavored coffee creamers
Most of the little packets of sweetner
Sugar free jello and puddings
I really worry about diabetics. They are suffering one really bad disease anyway and they buy these sugar free products thinking they are completely safe. I can think right now of three people I know that have migraines that would not I am sure give up their diet soda for a while to see if it made any difference. We have become too trusting of what is on the grocery shelves.
Well this will give you an idea that you may need to become a label reader if you would like to avoid this.
I drank diet Cokes for several years with no problem whatsoever. There was a change in my system which allowed the aspartame to do it's evil deed.
It was never picked up by the three doctors I saw during those years. I was never asked about my diet and a blood test would have to be done designed to look for the substance and that was not what all the blood tests were looking for.
Yes people have died from complications of this...
They say that aspartame is on the market because it was decided years ago that it would only affect a small percentage of people. That small percentage could be in the thousands. If there are ten thousand people in this country that are having pain, it is not acceptable. I even fear that there have been knee surgeries done that were unnecessary.
I love my Coke and from the day I read the article I never drank another Diet Coke but I am still struggling with giving up a regular Coke here and there. If they can get to the moon, there ought to be a way to make products that don't hurt people. Think about all the problems with medications these days, it is getting downright frightening.

Here and Now
Well, I will finally come more to the here and now and let you know what I am working up to.But first I will back track about 12 years. One morning I woke up with my right knee swollen and stiff and hurting. No real working up to this took place so I was surprised and I was sure I had not injured it. I could not completely straighten the leg out. From then on for about four and a half months to five months I was in pain. The twenty four seven kind of pain. I could hardly believe that after I was off my feet and lying down I could not get any relief. It felt like my knee was on fire inside.
There were about five steps up to the office I worked in and it was all I could do to get up those stairs. One morning I woke up and that pain was gone to a great extent. The knee felt stiff but it did not hurt so terribly. I was relieved and thought maybe the episode was at an end.
Some months later I woke the same way one morning except this time it was my left knee. I could not even lay anyway that did not hurt. I tried propping the knee up with pillows, finally I did learn that it seemed to help to lay in kind of a spoon fashion on my side with a couple of pillows between my knees so they did not touch. I could not stand that at all. I tried warm baths in epsom salts, I soaked in a hot tub, I rubbed on several brands of arthritic rubs took arthritis pain relievers, but it was still twenty four seven.
For some time the knees took turns, first one and then the other. I kept thinking that I would really be in trouble if they both got that way at the same time. Eventually that was the case and during the last year to two years before discovering what the problem was, my left hip and left shoulder were involved also. I was becoming disabled from the joint problems. There were movements I could no longer make. It became very difficult for instance, to step into the tub.
Besides the joint pain, I had skin problems. My elbows and up the back of my arms were covered with what looked like psoriasis. My sleep was very interuppted, fatigue, and finally near the end I had heart palpitations.
One day at a checkout stand I noticed a caption on the cover of a women's magazine. It said, "IS YOUR DIET SODA MAKING YOU SICK." I bought a copy and read it as soon as I got home. I knew as soon as I read the short article that I had found the answer to my problem. It was aspartame. I never drank another diet soda and made an appointment with a new doctor because I could see that I needed some specialized help.
Here is a list of things that had been reported as caused by aspartame:
Endocrine system out of whack
Thyroid problems
Migraines
Vertigo
Skin problems
Medications not working
Actually the endocrine system can produce a number of problems including heart palpitations, sleep problems, heat intolerance and some others.
I had all of these except the migraines thank goodness.
Long story short within three weeks of my last diet soda the skin problems had disappeared, within two to three months the joint pain was much better. I have come a long way in reversing things but not full circle and maybe I never can.
I really would like to skate again but I know that I will have to work on balance, losing weight and in general getting into better shape. When your leg hurts you favor the one that hurts worse and it really plays with your balance.
I was grown before I realized that skating had been something I actually had a passion for. It was my sport. I know of a number of people my age and older that still participate in some very physical activities. Including skating and tennis and a number of things, but I am not aware of any that had to give up physical activity and then get back into something like this, though I am there have been some.
From here on I will be telling about exercises and experiences I have in getting a second chance to do something that was so much fun. I am thinking that by putting this in writing maybe I will not give up but be more inclined to see it through, The blog will end when I am rolling again.

Back to the musical
A few times in my life I have had a dream that played through just like watching a video. This was one of those and it started in childhood and went through being a young woman and mother.
I was in the audience of a theater watching people on stage. To the left was a narrow set or risers, (like used when a choir is performing, except it was only 3 and 4 people wide. There were kids on stage, one on a bike and a couple playing hopscotch and a couple more playing jacks. And of course a couple of kids on skates on the side walk. Seems like one even with a hula hoop.
The tiny choir was singing songs of the 50,s maybe Elvis in "All Shook Up." Perhaps a little Buddy Holly thrown in. Everyone was having a good time.
Time moved on and I was a little older and at one of the hundred's of Teen Canteen dances I went too. We were twisting with Chubby and doing the "Bristol Stomp" and some kind of line dance that I don't remember the name to but it worked perfectly to the song "Walking to New Orleans" by Fats Domino. Now where the music was coming from I could not say. After all this was a dream. During this time I rushed home from school to watch Bandstand. There was "The Duke of Earl." "Blue Moon," I guess you might call these doo wap songs and of course many of them made a great impression on me.
Then it moved on to a little more serious vain. A few crushes and a few boyfriends. "Love letters straight from your heart, keep us so near while apart," a line from a song that even today reminds me of a young man I wrote to for about 2 years or more in my teens. "My Girl", which always made me wish someone would feel that way about me. In the 60's a Japanese song came out that was really beautiful. Even though in was all in Japanese, the meaning soon was put out and of course it was about a lost love. That song always reminded me of a certain boy I dated because it was playing a lot on the radio at that time.
There were of course plenty of torch songs that tell the story of breakups and the end of crushes.
Then I met THE ONE. Many old pop songs came to mind during that time. Things like "One Enchanted Evening," "I Could Have Danced All Night," some really tender songs about very strong feelings.
Finally after 2 1/2 years of heart wrenching ups and downs we were married. Something like "Going to the Chapel," and another one or two about getting married portrayed that time.
When I was a young married woman, it was "Love, Love Will Keep Us Together."
It was years later when Lori Morgan came out with a song "Called Something in Red." I was past the young married and young mother stage but I realized immediately that the song told so much about being at that point in your life. It was never a big hit but did get some play and I bought the tape mostly for that song.
Even today a song can play and it takes me to a certain time, a certain place, or a certain emotion. Songs remind me of friends and events. In my late thirties, a song came out and a friend at work told me that song always made her think of me. It was something like......we had it all, just like Bogie and Bacall.
The scene ended with an older me, with silver hair skating out to the center of the stage and doing a few graceful turns and spins to "I Did It My Way."
I woke up actually chuckling to myself and I think I must have laughed out loud. Yes my simple story of an American girl could well be the next "Grease," or "Hairspray" or "Cry Baby." I thought that was incredible at first but after thinking about it I realized that every one of us has a story. What we think is mundane and ordinary has something in it that is not. I also realized that I wanted to skate again. Just a few times even I wanted to go round and round and soak up the music.
My next entry will be about perhaps doing that. Talk to you later.

Just a bit of fun, I can't help but share this photo I came across in Reminisce Magazine
The couple pictured was married during a roller rink wedding I believe it was in the late forties. There was another newly wed couple in the group. The two couples went to Seattle for a honeymoon and the article said they skated at several rinks in the area. The woman ended her article saying that "yes, she still has her skates."
I also came across an article on Yahoo about a woman so passionate to skate (ice skate) that she undertook to lose 100 lbs. I think the mother of 4 has since done some competitive skating.
It just goes to show how a passion for something can make a difference. This is all I have to add today, but before the month is out I will post again. I promise you will eventually see where all this leads.
